History of Gene's Family Market
November 1952
Gene Sorden completed his time in the United States Army and started working at Johnson's Market in Newaygo
1954
Gene Sorden started as a manager at Mumson's Market in Grant, not knowing that it wouldbecome Gene's Market in the future
1955
Gene left Mumson’s to work for Harold's IGA in Newaygo. Here he learned the fine points of the grocery business from one of the best grocers in the area
1957
Gene went to manage the old Mumson’s Market. Fred Vandenbelt and Gene were partners until 1964 when Gene bought Fred's shares
1958
Gene hired a well–known meat cutter in the area, Jim Hepinstall. This was a huge turning point. As Gene's children grew all of them became workers at the store. They started by sorting bottles and worked their way up. When Gene's youngest son started school, Gene's wife Elaine came to the store as produce manager. Now Gene had a meat cutter and a produce manager
1970
Gene built an addition that doubled the store in size. When the addition was built, the size of the staff also doubled
Early 1980s
Dan and Joe (Gene's sons) realized that they needed a larger store
1985
Land was purchased and planning for the new location began
1987
The new location was ready to open with Joe as Manager and Dan as Assistant Meat Manager
1992
The second store in Croton was opened with Dan as Manager
1994
Elaine and Gene both retired from Gene's Family Market
2017
Joe and Dan sold both stores to Elliott and LaRissa Vanderlaan
